Farm-Themed Speech and Language Activities for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Calling all little farmers! 🐄 🚜 🌾

Farm themes are always a hit! If your child loves animals, tractors, and everything barnyard, you're in the right place. We've gathered some of our favorite farm-themed books, games, and simple activities that make it easy to work on speech and language skills through play.

We love using themes in speech therapy because they help children stay excited about learning. They also make it easier for kids to connect new ideas to what they already know and use those skills in everyday life. You can read more about the benefits of themed learning here. Now, let’s head to the farm and explore some of our favorite speech and language activities! 🌾🐷📚

Easy At-Home Activities

🚜 1. Farmer Says

Work on following directions and understanding action words with this farm-themed version of Simon Says.

  • Examples:

    • "Farmer says milk the cow."

    • "Farmer says plant the seeds."

    • "Farmer says drive the tractor."

Depending on your child, add more steps to each direction. You can also switch roles and have your child be the farmer! This is a great way to practice giving directions and building language skills, too.

🐷 2. Guess My Farm Animal

A fun way to work on asking and answering questions, describing, and inferencing to guess the animal!

Place a farm animal card on your forehead or hide it behind a folder or behind your back. You can also use small farm animal figurines if you have them at home.

Ask questions like:

  • Does it have feathers?

  • Does it lay eggs?

  • Is it pink?

This is a great way to encourage expressive language skills and work on describing attributes like size, color, and features.

🌽 3. Farm Animal Scavenger Hunt

Encourage receptive language and listening skills with this game!

Hide farm animal pictures or figurines around the room and give directions using prepositions like under, over, and on top of. An interactive way to practice following directions while building understanding of spatial concepts.

Children find the picture or figurine and describe where they found it:

  • "The pig is under the table."

  • "The cow is behind the chair."

If there's one thing we've learned, it's that kids are always more excited to learn when it involves something they love—and for many little ones, that's animals! We hope these farm-themed activities help you create meaningful moments with your child while supporting their speech and language development.
