One of our favorite ways to encourage a love of books is by pairing stories with hands-on experiences. Reading books centered around a familiar summer theme helps children build vocabulary, make real-world connections, and engage more deeply with what they're reading.
Take the learning one step further by incorporating a simple water-themed activity after story time. Here are a few ideas:
Read outside before cooling off with a hose or sprinkler.
Pair an ocean or beach book with a sensory bin filled with water, shells, and sand.
Read an animal-themed water book, then bring out plastic animals and let your child "give them baths" using water and a little mud.
Visit the pool or beach after reading and look for things you spotted in the story.
